Spurgeon on Preaching

I don’t think Spurgeon would be impressed with the emerging concept of preaching.  He once said, “The church will never make any great advance until once more God sends here and there, and in fifty places, men with burning hearts and trumpet voices to proclaim the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth.  We NEED MEN that will not yield to the current of the times, nor care one iota about it: but will hold their own and hold their Master’s Word against all comers, because the Lord of hosts is with them, and the Spirit of Christ resteth upon them.

I would have you at this time realize the Christ with the seven stars in his hand, and i would have you pray, ‘Lord fill thy land with stars again.  Light up the darkness of this period with flaming preachers of the Word to the praise of the glory of thy grace.'”

That is what this blog site is praying for as well.  If you have not listened to the first 20 minutes of John Piper’s address at the Together for the Gospel conference it may just change your life.  I have listened to it no less than 10x.

May God summon a generation of warrior preachers who love the lost and who only seek the Master’s approbation.

  1. Thanks Caleb. I didn’t know about those messages. I can’t wait to listen to them.

    Great quote by Spurgeon!

This address is from 2006 T4G. I believe Piper offers the sermon for free at dg.org

  4. Do you mean his T4G 2006 talk on ‘Why Expositional Preaching Is Particularly Glorifying to God’, or a different one?

  5. Also, would you happen to know the original source of that Spurgeon quote?

Sam i do not know the original source of that Spurgeon quote. I believe it was taken from Iain Murray’s book on “Spurgeon V. Hyper-Calvinism.” With over 4000 sermons in print Spurgeon quotes are hard to track down.

Also, you are correct the lecture i was speaking about was “Why Expositional Preaching Is Particularly Glorifying to God” by Dr. Piper.

Have you listened to the first 20 minutes yet?

    Blessings in Christ,

  7. Just listened to the first part a second time. Definitely stirring stuff, and nothing but the truth.
Personally, as one just come to the gospel and not involved in any traditions, it affirms much of my thoughts on preaching.

Thanks for your note. Have a great weekend.

  9. Amen, brother. We as men must be bold with the truth of the gospel, no matter what. Can’t go wrong with a Spurgeon quote, either!
