Fetishes of Preaching

In his book Preaching with Passion, Alex Montoya identifies what he calls “common fetishes of preaching” (pp.57-59) which often blind us from being compassionate preachers when it comes to knowing our congregations:

  1. Preaching for hire
  2. Preaching to draw a crowd
  3. Preaching to please an audience
  4. Preaching to promote our learning
  5. Preaching to print or publish
  6. Preaching to protect our “kingdom”
  7. Preaching to pass the time

  1. I am looking forward to the purchase and reading this book. Thanks for the heads-up. How many times do we as preachers forget why we preach. I would also encourage members to remember that the preaching of the gospel is designed to save the preacher and those that hear him (cf. 1 Tim. 4:16).
