Both defended/defend the faith that they believe…I believe that Spurgeon ministered to a different group of people (urban) than John, so the presentation comes across different, especially in sermons

Spurgeon stood up for the gospel (some would even say he gave his life) against the downgrade controversy of his day.
MacArthur has stood up for the gospel against the church growth movement of his day.
